Community through shared stories, healing through writing and nurturing each other.

Welcome to the RISE Book Project! Fathom collaborated with the nonprofit organization RISE, Resilience In Sustaining Empowerment, on the RISE Book Project to support 10 King County families affected by gun violence in developing, writing, and publishing family grief books. 

We worked with each family over the course of 9 months to develop their stories, pairing each writer with a writing coach and an illustrator from the community. Most of these stories were written by children with the support of their families to share memories celebrating a parent never forgotten.

Our process included group sessions, a writing workbook that Fathom assisted in developing, personal coaching / writing sessions, and rounds of drafts and edits culminating in 10 manuscripts, self published and owned by each family in perpetuity. Fathom helped host a book launch party in December of 2023 for families and their communities with readings, a book store, and reception at Bryd Barr in Seattle.

Fathom also produced a series of documentary styled interviews with three families in the RISE Book Project in partnership with Madrona Bureau. 

It was an honor to be a part of this project. The generosity, love, and healing we were able to experience from families telling their stories was a great gift.
